Paul Panhuysen
Voltaic Memory Space
1st July 2011 - 18th September 2011
back to the season

Born in 1934, Paul Panhuysen belongs to the first generation of artists who broke free from classical performance forms and spaces. The Dutch citizen’s works holds a singular position in sound art. He created his first sound sculpture in 1965. Since 1982, he has been realising installations with long strings. Paul Panhuysen specially created a new sound installation for the Small Water Reservoir which gives the acoustic and visual aspects of the space equal importance. The clarity of the architecture and the acoustic “transparency” make up the cornerstones of his artistic work. In “Voltaic Memory Space”, large stainless steel sheets obstruct the centre of the Small Water Reservoir. The six sheets are overdimensional membranes for the sounds emitted from long strings. Their oscillations unfold evenly in the space. They are counterpointed by small sound modules that are hung freely about the room and are reminiscent of birdsong. Together with the powerful resonating sounds of the sheets, the Small Water Reservoir is transformed into a wide, sounding sound space.
