Maia Urstad
„Meanwhile, in Shanghai... (berlin)“

Maia Urstad is working at the intersection of audio and visual art. She was educated at the Bergen National Academy of the Arts and has also a background from rock music. Her work involves integrating sound into specific locations. Recent practice includes outdoor and indoor sound installations and performances, using radios and portable CD-and cassette players for both sound transmission and as sculptural objects. Communication technology is a recurring theme in Urstad’s work, often with the use of radio as a central auditory, visual and conceptual element. In particular, she has a fascination for different methods and technologies that are used in recent history to communicate over varying distances; from morse code and other radio communications, to digital terrestrial network and the use of fibre optics. This has included projects such as; ”CQ Kaliningrad/Bergen”, “Northumberland Transfer” and ”0100101- a fibre optic sound installation” in collaboration with Hilde Hauan Johnsen.
_Urstad’s works have been presented in different contexts around the world, as Bergen Kunstmuseum, Lydgalleriet, Johannesburg Art Gallery, Mamam do Patio Recife, Brasil, Prefix ICA Toronto, Electrohype at Malmö Konsthall amongst other. She is also part of the international group freq-out curated by CM von Hausswolff. She curates and produces sound- related art projects and exhibitions through her company Maur Prosjekter, and was one of the founders of Lydgalleriet. Maia Urstad is published by Touch Music (MCPS).
